Brainspotting was developed by a practitioner of EMDR who found a more targeted and deeper way to access underlying layers of trauma and distress.
The founder of Brainspotting, Dr. David Grand, says “What’s in the body is in the brain and what’s in the brain is in the body.” There is a significant mind-body connection and to heal one we must heal the other. By working with the body via noticing physical sensations that accompany distressing thoughts and emotions, we can also release chronic bodily pains, tension, discomfort, or sleep disturbance.
The essence of Brainspotting is that we can tap into the the brain’s natural self-healing process in order to release where trauma, anxiety, self-esteem, fears, or performance concerns are trapped in our brains and bodies.
Even if you’ve tried stand-alone EMDR before, integrating Brainspotting with EMDR can be helpful to address and resolve any emotional and physical pain that keeps you stuck in patterns you want to change. Many people report going deeper and subsequently experiencing greater benefits from Brainspotting compared to other modalities, including EMDR on its own, and even after years or decades in therapy. Different from many talk therapies, Brainspotting enables you to heal without having to tell or retell your story.
Traditional forms of talk therapy engage the outer portion of the brain that is highly evolved and language-based; however, many of our emotional experiences (trauma, anxiety, stress, etc.) are stored in the deeper, inner portion of the brain.
That means traditional talk therapy can only go so far and only be so effective in truly resolving your concerns.
Brainspotting specifically targets that deep, inner portion of the brain, bypassing all of the ways you’ve tried to intellectualize, minimize, or even invalidate your own concerns. As a result, you get to experience significant and lasting relief sooner.
Meet New Jersey brainspotting therapist
Abrah Sprung, Ph.D.
As a licensed clinical psychologist with over twenty years in therapeutic practice, I've devoted my career as a therapist to helping clients heal through innovative approaches like brainspotting. My path to specializing in trauma therapy began after observing the remarkable results of alternative therapy approaches with first responders following 9/11. This powerful experience inspired me to pursue brainspotting training, as well as education in other cutting-edge trauma therapies like EMDR.
Beyond my professional experience, my dedication to this work also comes from my personal journey. Having undergone my own healing process, I've experienced the power of trauma therapy firsthand. I deeply understand how transformative the right support can be, especially therapy that combines evidence-based methods with a warm, supportive therapeutic alliance.
Above all, it's my mission as a therapist to remind you that you don't have to go through this alone. Too often, we try to carry the burden of our past in silence, which only adds to our suffering. Rest assured, healing is possible, and I'd be honored to support you in your process.
My approach to brainspotting therapy
I integrate brainspotting therapy and EMDR techniques to access the deeper neural pathways where trauma is stored. While many therapists offer these modalities separately, I've discovered that their careful combination creates a uniquely effective healing experience.
Brainspotting uses fixed eye positions to locate and process precise brain-body connections where distress is stored, while EMDR's bilateral stimulation helps reprocess traumatic memories. By weaving these approaches together, we can:
Target your concerns with greater precision than either method alone
Bypass the intellectual "knowing" to access deep emotional healing
Process trauma without requiring you to repeatedly verbalize your experiences
Create lasting neurobiological change beyond what traditional talk therapy offers
This blended approach is especially helpful for clients who've tried conventional talk therapy and still haven't found the healing they've been longing for. Whether you're experiencing anxiety, the impact of past trauma, or other challenges, this combination helps you finally break free from patterns that have kept you stuck for too long.

Common mental health issues addressed with brainspotting treatment
-
Many people turn to brainspotting after experiencing trauma that still impacts their daily lives. This approach is helpful in guiding clients to access and heal memories of traumatic experiences stored deep in the brain and body without requiring you to repeatedly talk through painful memories. It works for both traumatic memories recent events and childhood experiences that talk therapy hasn't fully addressed.
-
When your metal health concerns include anxiety that feels overwhelming or panic attacks keep disrupting your life, brainspotting can help get to the root causes. Rather than just managing symptoms, we can identify and release the deeper patterns where anxiety lives in your brain and body, creating more meaningful and lasting change.
-
Whether you're an athlete, performer, or professional hitting a wall, brainspotting helps clear the mental blocks holding you back. By processing the specific brain spots where performance anxiety or mental barriers originate in session, you can access your natural abilities more consistently, especially under pressure.
-
Our bodies often express what our minds haven't processed. When you're dealing with physical symptoms showing up in your body that medical treatments haven't fully resolved, brainspotting can help address the connections between emotional distress and the feel of physical discomfort, often providing relief where other approaches haven't.
-
Sometimes you intellectually know you're capable and worthy, but emotionally don't believe it. Brainspotting helps bridge this gap by reaching the deeper brain where these core beliefs actually live. This creates change that feels real and authentic, not just something you're trying to convince yourself of.
-
Finding yourself in the same relationship dynamics over and over? These patterns often stem from early experiences that shaped how you connect with others. Brainspotting helps update these old patterns, allowing you to respond to current relationships from who you are today, not from past conditioning.
Am I the right therapist for you?
While my practice is open to all, I recognize that I may not be the best fit for every situation. Here are some instances when I may recommend working with another provider or local resource:
Experiencing active crisis. My practice is focused on outpatient therapy. If you need urgent support for a mental health crisis, I encourage you to contact the 988 Lifeline, which is available 24/7.
Need a different service. I offer individual therapy and therapeutic intensives. If you're looking for other types of therapy such ascouples therapy, family therapy, or child therapy, I may be able to connect you with a local marriage and family therapist.
Looking for a specific modality. If you're looking for an approach that I don't offer, like cognitive processing therapy (CPT), you may be better served by a different therapist.
If you're unsure whether we're the right fit for each other, I invite you to schedule a free 20-minute consultation.
FAQs about brainspotting
-
During a brainspotting therapy session, you’ll be guided to find a “brain spot”—a specific eye position that helps you access and process deep emotions or memories. You don’t have to force anything or analyze what comes up; your brain and body naturally do the work. My role is to create a safe, supportive space where you can tune in, notice what you’re feeling, and let your mind process at its own pace.
Some people experience insights or emotional shifts right away, while for others, the changes unfold gradually. However it happens, we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.
-
Brainspotting and EMDR share some similarities—they both help process trauma and emotional distress by working with the brain’s natural healing ability—but brainspotting and EMDR are not the same.
EMDR follows a more structured approach with eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, while a brainspotting session is often more flexible and focused on identifying specific “brain spots” that activate deeper processing.
Both EMDR and brainspotting approaches can be powerful, and I’m happy to help you decide which might be the best fit for you, as well as blend both techniques when appropriate.
-
Brainspotting can be a powerful tool for healing, but like any therapy, it’s not a perfect fit for everyone. Some people may find it brings up intense emotions or memories, which can feel overwhelming at times. Others might not notice immediate changes and wonder if it’s “working.”
Because brainspotting work relies on deep, internal processing, the shifts can feel subtle or take time to unfold. That said, I always support clients in moving at a pace that feels right, and we can adjust the approach as needed to ensure you feel safe and grounded throughout the process. Plus, I offer intensives that may be a good fit if you're looking for more concentrated healing.
